Anniversary

Thirty four years ago today, at 11:30 a.m., in the Mansion Chapel at Georgian Court University, I was married. I was 22, Dennis was 23 and we had no idea what we were getting into. Which I guess was a good thing.

It was a beautiful Fall day. At the reception, at Peterson’s Sunset Cabin, we danced to the dulcet tones of the Moon Misters. It was a really fun wedding. Everyone had a good time.

HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED

Peterson’s, which was a Shore landmark for over 50 years, has been closed since the 1990’s. This blogger captured it perfectly, including haunting pictures of the abandoned ruin it is today, http://www.lostdestinations.com/peterson.htm.

Dennis died in 1993, so this year he is gone exactly as long as we were married.   So unimaginably sad.  He never saw our children grow up or got to meet his grandson.  My son brought my grandson to the cemetery instead.

I don’t think students are allowed to get married in the Mansion Chapel at Georgian Court anymore, although I may be wrong about that. The Mansion Chapel, originally the conservatory in the George Gould mansion, is so much prettier than the stark Student Chapel on campus.

But the relaxed informality of the Mansion, where I actually lived as a senior, changed forever the afternoon someone walked off with a priceless Tiffany lamp.

AND THE SEASONS, THEY GO ROUND AND ROUND...

Thirty four years. Thirty four years of everything life consists of: happiness, pain, sorrow, the gift of four children, much laughter, much loss, much tenacious determination.

Astonishing that so much time has gone by.   That 22 year old is literally long gone.  She is part of who I am now, but I am such a different person.

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game.

Such a beautiful story, Marie. I can see how all of who you were is an essential part of who you've grown to be.
I love to read such stories. I think many of those "all-girl" colleges have adopted similar practices -- Rosemont, where I attended and Immaculata, my daughter's school -- I don't think they allow weddings in their small chapels, either.

Peace,
Muff

Bittersweet memories, eh?
I love that campus. I went there at night for several years.

Happy Anniversary

A lovely post Marie. It touched my heart and I felt your courage and love in between the lines. Your poem is so true. Round and round we go, and where we stop who knows.

I am so sorry for your loss...I know today must have been a hard day but hopefully the beautiful memories you have will sustain you. We lost our 9 year old daughter in 1986 and anniversaries are always difficult. Life is certainly full of varying seasons, some up and some down. But God blesses us in it all if we just look around us. I hope you have found happiness in your children and now grands. Came over to your blog from Words of Wisdom.

Marie, what a bittersweet story. Part of me wants to know more, but the other part wants to allow you your privacy. It's certainly something that will stay with me a long time. I'm so glad I just discovered you and your blog, through WOW. Hugs to you.

Such a bittersweet love story, Marie. It is eye opening to look back at the person you were in your 20s compared to the person you are today.

So much change has happened since I was 22. It is a good thing we don't know what we're getting into ahead of time and amazing to look back on the things we experienced and lived through.

Very moving. My father passed a bit over a year ago and my mom had a rough go of it. And it certainly has changed who I am today. He was a great man and with his passing my views on living have completely changed.

thanks for sharing.

Marie,

Your story made me weep. The sweet promises of being a 22 year old bride; we really never can realize what life will bring us. I hope time has helped mend the wound of loss, if just a little.

I can't even begin to imagine how hard your anniversary is for you. What a sweet story you tell, and how sad, too. It's good that I can see how you have grown and developed in spite of, and because of, your husband's early death.

I see Dennis whenever I see your children. And I'll never forget that sad day in 1993. I love the story about the Circle Line, "joggers", and "gauges" - a good one to share about Dennis.

Thank you, thank you everyone who took the time to leave these beautiful comments. I am touched and honored. I am lucky to have you in my life. Theoretically you are in my life virtually, but your caring and compassion and kindness feel pretty darn real!!

Anne: For as long as I live, your presence and support that day will be how I picture the definition of friendship.

And, despite how sad it was, your arrival that day is one of my all time favorite memories. As I opened the door you exclaimed "I'm so sorry!" And then, thrusting a platter towards me, "Here's some shrimp!" lol That still makes me giggle. You were on your way to a Christmas party with a shrimp platter, but you came to us instead when you heard the news.

Somehow I sense that this is the kind of friend all you readers are as well. Again, I am so lucky to know you all.
